Governors Ignore COVID-19 and Embrace Protests

(UnitedVoice.com) – The months-long quarantines to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have gone largely ignored by Democratic governors. Now, they’re embracing the widespread protests in their states — despite the fact that the coronavirus threat is just as real now as it was a few weeks ago.

While health officials express their concerns about COVID-19 spreading as a result of the protests, Democrats are doing what they do best — protect the rights of those they agree with. This is being done regardless of the virus’ consequences that they warned about for so long.

Mixed Messages

In April and May, Conservatives exercised their constitutional rights to protest their state governments as livelihoods were being destroyed due to the quarantines. They responded to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) enacting the most stringent stay-at-home orders in the country. She denounced the protestors by saying they were “endangering people’s lives.” Just a few weeks ago, she said opening the state too soon would be “catastrophic for our families, our healthcare system and our businesses.”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said he didn’t need conservative protestors to “convince” him that people needed to get back to work and not be trapped in their homes. Yet, he said that New York needed to remain closed to control COVID-19.

In neighboring New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) said people needed to have confidence that their health would not be in jeopardy and that decisions would be made on facts to prevent a “boomerang wave.”

In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said opening the state would be judged not by politics or protests. While saying he supported conservatives’ rights to protest, Newsom cautioned that people should ensure they are not infecting others with COVID-19.

It appears these messages of caution and encouraging state-wide lockdowns have been put to the side in light of the protests.

Democratic Governors Embrace Protestors Now While Ignoring COVID-19

Protests and riots have broken out across America over the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25. Floyd was an African-American man who died after Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was recorded putting his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder.

Rightly, Americans are outraged and the African-American community is tired of repeated incidents of discrimination by police.

As thousands of people in cities across the country protest, with some turning into violent riots, governors who criticized conservative demonstrations less than a month ago are silent now about COVID-19. Instead, they support the constitutional rights of protestors, as they should have all along.

Picture after picture of protestors shows that people are not social distancing. Yet, there are no outspoken statements of concern or disgust about spreading COVID-19 to grandma and grandpa and killing people as a result of the diseases spread.

It seems that, maybe, some Democratic governors may be open to shutting down or minimizing the free speech of those who don’t agree with them while supporting the agendas of those they do agree with.

Why aren’t Democratic governors warning protestors that they are putting thousands of people’s lives at risk and that protestors should find another way to get their message across like they did conservatives?

It does make one wonder if the risk of spreading COVID-19 was real a few weeks ago, why isn’t it a concern now? The silence on the issue is deafening.
